This prevailing mood prompted new ideas in all walks of life, fashion, music, literature and even coinage were touched by the bright promise held by the future. Seeking to create coinage that was uniquely Australian, the government approved the design and minting of a penny that featured Australia’s beloved kookaburra. Not only that, the coin would change shape, moving away from the British-style circle to a square for the first time. In 1919, the Kookaburra Penny was born. The design was minted for just two years and became legendary amongst coin collectors as one of the rarest and most coveted Australian coins.

You’ll noticed the monarch is not wearing a crown. An audacious move of the era, one that sets this coin apart from the British-influenced design that came before it. The inscription, “GEORGE V D. G. BRITT.OMN:REX” (“George V by the Grace of God, King of all the British Territories”) appears as it did on the coin, along with provenance information including an acknowledgement of the Melbourne engraving company Stokes & Son which developed the design.
