As the First World War ended, Australians were ready for a change. The tragedy of the war had left a generation looking for a new direction. This prevailing mood prompted new ideas in all walks of life, fashion, music, literature and even coinage were touched by the bright promise held by the future. Seeking to create coinage that was uniquely Australian, the government approved the design and minting of a penny that featured Australia’s beloved kookaburra. Not only that, the coin would change shape, moving away from the British-style circle to a square for the first time. In 1919, the Kookaburra Penny was born. The design was minted for just two years and became legendary amongst coin collectors as one of the rarest and most coveted Australian coins.

The Kookaburra Penny is set to leave its mark in the world of fine timepieces. Inspired by the rarity and the legend of the coin, The Bradford Exchange has crafted a classically-styled men’s watch showcasing an exacting replica of the penny’s design. Like the coin which inspired it, our exclusive “1919 Type 4 Kookaburra Penny Men’s Watch” is an exciting “first” and a rare one too.

Our Master Jewellers have created an exacting replica of the penny’s design which is hosted on the watch face. Crafted in dimensional raised-relief in an aged silver tone, the replica perfectly recreates the streamlined kookaburra that entranced Australians then as now. The words “AUSTRALIA” and “ONE PENNY” say all they need to say in their simplicity.

Powered by a precision quartz movement offering reliability and accuracy, including the 31-day date window below. The faithful recreation of penny’s design continues on the case back which showcase the coin’s obverse. An engraved reproduction features King George V. You’ll noticed the monarch is not wearing a crown. An audacious move of the era, one that sets this coin apart from the British-influenced design that came before it. The inscription, “GEORGE V D. G. BRITT.OMN:REX” (“George V by the Grace of God, King of all the British Territories”) appears as it did on the coin, along with provenance information including an acknowledgement of the Melbourne engraving company Stokes & Son which developed the design. The reverse also hold the proud words “Uniquely Australian.” Your watch will be individually numbered creating a true one-of-a-kind you’ll be proud to display or wear. The genuine leather band and leather-look, penny-branded design gift box offer the perfect finishing touches.
