With this exclusive collection you have the opportunity to celebrate 90 years of Australian history. This extremely rare coin set, and collectible stamp has been created especially to celebrate the 1927 opening of Australian parliament by theDuke and Duchess of York (later George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother).

After Federation in 1901, Australia’s Parliament first met in Melbourne, pending decisions about a new location for Australia’s capital. Canberra was chosen in 1913. Located midway between Sydney and Melbourne, controversy between the two cities was avoided.

Architect John Smith Murdoch and his team designed the new Parliament House to be simple and functional. The new building was opened by the Duke and Duchess of York on the 9thMay 1927, as the highlight of their royal tour. Crowds gathered and viewed from specially erected stands. The ceremony was lavish and included Dame Nellie Melba singing ‘God Save the King’ (the Australian National Anthem at the time). Air Force and civilian aircraft flew over the entourage. Using a golden key, the Duke of York unlocked the front doors and led the official party into King’s Hall where he unveiled the statue of King George V (his father), then in the new Senate Chamber opened the first parliamentary session.

In a first-ever edition, this limit commemorative set includes an original 1927 Commemorative One Florin, a Proof condition .925 Silver commemorative (with 24-carat gold accent) showing The Duke and Duchess on the Parliament House steps with dignitaries and guests in the background, as well as a 1927 Australian Commonwealth Three-halfpence postage stamp that was especially published for the historical event.
