In the early 1960s, Australian support for South Vietnam was largely in keeping with the policies of Allied nations – particularly the United States – to stem the spread of communism across Asia. The South Vietnamese government repeatedly requested security assistance, and the arrival of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam – thereafter known as the ‘Team’ – in South Vietnam in August 1962 marked the beginning of Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War.
