Throughout its proud history, the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) has served with courage and distinction in major conflicts including the First and Second World Wars, Korean War, Malayan Emergency, Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation, and the Vietnam War. Today, as of 2025, the RAN operates 36 commissioned vessels, 12 non-commissioned vessels, and employs over 16,000 personnel. It stands as one of the most advanced naval forces in the South Pacific region, maintaining a strong presence in the Indian Ocean and participating in peacekeeping and military operations around the globe.

Yet the Navy’s story is also one of profound sacrifice. From the loss of HMAS Waterhen in June 1941 to the tragic sinking of HMAS Sydney later that year, these events marked some of Australia’s darkest naval moments. During 1941 and 1942, the RAN suffered multiple devastating losses — including HMAS Parramatta, Perth, Yarra, Canberra, Vampire, Voyager, Kuttabul, and Armidale — with hundreds of brave sailors lost in service to their nation. Even after the war, tragedy struck again in 1947 when HMAS Warrnambool was sunk by a floating mine off Queensland. Now, those heroic stories and solemn sacrifices are commemorated in a magnificent six-coin collection — the “Lost at Sea” Six-Commemorative Set — available exclusively from The Bradford Exchange.
