The Third Battle of Ypres has been remembered as one of the most devastating military campaigns of the 20th century. So much was against the Allied forces: entrenched German infantry in concrete fortifications, heavy artillery barrages and persistent rain which turned the area around Ypres into as rain-sodden hell hole. All of these obstacles did not stop our ANZAC troops from carrying out their duty to defend freedom. Throughout the battle, Australia and New Zealand’s infantry bravely battled on. The losses were huge, but the courage inherent in each soldier, born on the shores of Gallipoli, elevated them to stand amongst the greatest warriors in history. Today, in the 105th anniversary of the Ypres campaign, you CAN commemorate the resilient spirt which has come to define Australia and New Zealand’s national characters with The “Third Battle of Ypres Golden Proof Coin”, an affirmation of our strength and courage then, now and forever more.

Historical records of the Ypres campaign bore witness to the devastation faced by our brave ANZACs. The imagery on the reverse of the coin depicts our troops methodically moving through Ypres whose famed Cloth Hall in the background is charred and broken. These are stalwart men whose defence of freedom remains their number one goal. The names of the five major battles fought by ANZAC troops during the Ypres campaign encircle the scene. Poppies of remembrance remind us of the huge numbers of casualties during those battles. A moving quote from Captain William Bunning 22nd Battalion (Victoria)- “… to look back where we came from, to Ypres… There was devastation. You could see the flashes of the guns from Broodeseinde right back to the Menin Gate” highlights the life and death struggle faced by our troops, but also affirms their unstinting dedication to the task at hand. Lest we forget. The obverse side features Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II who consented to the minting of the coin as a commemoration of the courage of the ANZAC forces who ensured freedom and hope would endure in a war-torn Europe.
