Launched on 29 November 1948, Holden’s very first model was simply known as the 48-215. The number 48 referred to the year production was proposed to begin, while 21 was the GM International code for an Australian vehicle, and 5 indicated a sedan. The launch was a meticulously planned event that reflected the nation’s pride and excitement – more than 18,000 were pre-ordered before a single finished car had even been displayed. “She’s a Beauty!” declared Prime Minister Ben Chifley at the unveiling, a phrase that captured the sentiment of the day. Holden was the first car designed with Australia in mind – built for our roads, weather and conditions – and Australians responded with unmatched enthusiasm. Only 163 cars were completed in 1948, but demand soared and waiting lists soon stretched into years. Nicknamed the FX, the 48-215 became a true national icon, paving the way for the FJ in 1953 and the generations of Holden vehicles that followed.
