When the Avro Lancaster first took to the skies on 9th January, 1941, a legend was born. Almost immediately, the success of this remarkable aircraft gave the Allied nations a sense of hope against the might of the German war machine. It’s difficult to conceive of the bravery of those air crews who ventured into enemy territory on those highly dangerous night missions. They must surely rank as some of the most courageous warriors the world has even known. Today, 80 years after that first flight, the Lancaster, its crews and its creator Roy Chadwick are celebrated in a new crown coin which captures the importance of its quest for Allied victory exclusive to The Bradford Exchange
The centrepiece of the coin design is a stirring montage of Chadwick symbolically watching his greatest creation in action. A full colour portrait of the Lancaster known as “G for George” takes pride of place in the design. Crewed by Australians and with the highest success rate in the Allied Bomber Command, “George” represented the pinnacle of courage in aerial warfare. A metallic rendering of a night sortie sees rhodium search lights zeroing in on a Lancaster.
