In April 1969, Anatole Lapine was hired as the new chief designer at Porsche. Just one year later, the native-born Latvian made his first artistic and dramatic mark in motorsport with the elaborate paint job bestowed to a long-tail Porsche 917 - the green and purple waves painted on the ‘hippie’ car using around 1,500 spray cans creating a wildly psychedelic effect. While the paintwork caused consternation on the executive floor, those on the race track were delighted, with Martini Racing achieving their first overall victory for Porsche at Le Mans in 1970. When Porsche released the Porsche 911 Carrera RS in 1973, it started the season in victorious fashion - winning the 24 Hours of Daytona in February. By the end of May, the factory Martini Racing squad had added a famous triumph at the Targa Florio to the trophy cabinet before the ’73 RSR was modified with a 3.0-litre engine for that year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans. This ‘Hippy’ version of that triumphant 911 pays tribute to the long-tail Porsche 917 famously customised by Anatole Lapine and his team who used around 1,500 spray cans to create its psychedelic effect.
